Betting in Roulette

There are a number of ways to bet in roulette.

Straight, or Single-Number (En Plein)

In a straight, or single-number bet, the chips are placed on one number of the layout, including the 0 (and the 00 on American layouts), so that the chips are not touching any of the lines enclosing the number. A winning single number bet will pay 35 to 1.

Split, or Two-Number (Á Cheval)

For a split, or two-number bet, the chips are placed on any line separating any of the numbers on the table; if the ball falls into either compartment, the player wins 17 to 1.

Street, or Three-Number (Transversale Pleine)

To make a street, or 3-number bet, the player puts the chips on the outside line of the layout. Thus, the bet is for the three numbers opposite the chips; the payoff odds on any of the three numbers will be 11 to 1.

Square, Quarter, Corner, or Four-Number (En Carre)

To make a square or quarter bet, the player puts the chips on the intersection of the lines between any four numbers. The payoff here is 8 to 1.

Line, or Six-Number (Transversale Six)

In a line, or six-number bet, the chips are placed on the intersection of the side line and a line between two “streets” on the table layout; the payoff odds for this strategy are 5 to 1.

Column, or Twelve-Number

To place a column, or 12-number bet, the player puts the chips on one of the three blank spaces at the bottom of the table layout. This means the bet is for the 12 numbers above the space. (On some tables, these squares are marked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.) The payoff on such a bet is 2 to 1.

Dozens, or Twelve-Number

A dozens bet is similar to a column bet. Here, however, the chips are placed on one of the spaces of the layout marked 12, betting that the ball will fall somewhere in 1–12, 13–24, or 25–36. The return here is 2 to 1.

Other Kinds of Bets

A player may also make a low-number or high-number bet, placing the chips on the layout space marked 1–18 (manque) or onto the space marked 19–36, (passe). In a black or red wager, the chips are placed on the space marked black (noir), or on a space marked red (rouge). An odd-number or even-number bet is one in which the chips are placed on the space marked odd (impair), or even (pair). In all three of these bets, the payoff is even money.
